Essential Job Duties/Scope of Work:
International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at highest risk, and with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergency situations, International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.
PROGRAM BACKGROUND
International Medical Corps is responding to the humanitarian crisis in five West African countries, Guinea-Bissau being one of them. Guinea-Bissau has not been directly affected by Ebola, but the country remains extremely vulnerable – more now than at any moment since the start of the West Africa outbreak. Neighboring Guinea continues to struggle to contain its outbreak, and is tracking active cases near the border with the Guinea-Bissau.
Recognizing the significant risk facing the country, and the limited capacity of the government and existing NGO partners in the country to respond to this EVD threat International Medical Corps has been present in Guinea-Bissau since March of this year, the fifth country in which we are engaging in Ebola preparedness and response efforts.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/SCOPE OF WORK:
- In collaboration with the medical trainer: conduct/participate in Ebola Treatment Facilities and community Environmental/WASH/institutional Health needs assessments.
- In collaboration with the medical trainer train service provider staff (e.g. national MoH staff, IMC staff, and staff from other agencies) in key aspects of Environmental/WASH/institutional Health in Ebola treatment facilities and community in Ebola context. In collaboration with the medical trainer Train and supervise national Environmental/WASH/institutional Health staff to build capacity for providing basic Environmental/WASH/institutional Health in Ebola treatment facilities and community. Provide technical support and guidance to national and local IMC staff Assist Environmental/WASH/institutional Health Coordinators develop and integrate strategy and protocols into IMCs Guinea-Bissau Ebola preparedness and response programming.
- Assist in designing and develop appropriate supervisory, monitoring and evaluation systems for infrastructure and WASH interventions at the community health care facilities
- In collaboration with the medical trainer Develop and implement appropriate guidance and documentation of all Environmental/WASH/institutional Health related activities (e.g. training materials, training reports, pre posttests, guidelines and protocols etc.)
- Strengthen links and referral mechanisms for various services and supports.
- 1. Participate in and contribute to interagency coordination groups and actively work with and coordinate with other local and international agencies and organizations engaged in health facilities related infectious disease control –related programming and services.
- Ensure review of all training materials and tools by IMC Technical Unit Environmental/WASH Advisor
- Assist with the development and design of proposals, tracking of activities and reporting in coordination with the Technical Unit Environmental/WASH Advisor
- Assist in hiring national Environmental/WASH staff.
Qualifications:
• The qualified candidate will have relevant educational qualifications such as a degree Environmental Health, Institutional health with 3+ years working experience
• Previous NGO experience required
• “Highly desired criteria” includes previous work in an isolation center, highly contagious area or Level 4 bio-safety area, experience working on viral hemorrhagic fevers (Ebola, Lassa, Marburg, etc.) and knowledge of infection control and prevention.
• Previous experience working in humanitarian setting or low resource setting
• Strong training and mentoring skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently
• Extremely flexible, and can cope with stressful workloads and frustration
• Creativity and the ability to work with limited resources
• Fluency in English and Portuguese required
